Case Study: LED Heliport Inset Lighting on a Building Rooftop Helipad
A city-center building rooftop helipad needed reliable, ICAO-compliant lighting that could survive constant aircraft and maintenance vehicle traffic. Anhang Technology supplied the AH-HP-I Serial LED Heliport Inset Light. Here is how the product works and what it does, in Q&A form.
Q1: Where is the AH-HP-I installed?
The AH-HP-I is an inset (recessed) light mounted flush into the helipad surface. It is typically used on building rooftops, TLOF touchdown and lift-off areas, FATO final approach and take-off areas, taxiways and aiming points. In this project, units were embedded around the rooftop TLOF perimeter and flight path alignment guidance points.
Q2: What is its main role?
It guides pilots during approach, touchdown and take-off by marking the landing area boundary and approach path day and night. Green, white, yellow or blue 360° omnidirectional output complies with ICAO Annex 14 Vol. II, FAA AC 150/5390-2B and CAAC standards.
Q3: Why choose an inset light here?
Because rooftop helipads are constantly crossed by helicopters and maintenance vehicles. The pressure-resistant lens allows vehicles to roll over the light, while the die-cast aluminum body and IP68 waterproof rating keep it working reliably in rain and underground conditions.
Q4: What about energy and maintenance?
CREE ultra-high-intensity LEDs consume 95% less power than incandescent equivalents (≤8.5W per unit), operate 24 hours continuously, and last over 100,000 hours — more than 10 years of service with minimal maintenance.
Q5: What options were used in this project?
Infrared LEDs for NVG night-vision operations and a VHF pilot-to-ground remote control for instant on/off switching. Solar power systems and adjustable light intensity are also available.
Result: The rooftop helipad now operates safely around the clock with low energy cost, low maintenance and full ICAO compliance.
